TIPS FOR AN EFFECTIVE COMMENT

1. Describe yourself and your ESA. Identify your credentials or experience that distinguishes you from others (ie: attorney, businessman, therapist, veteran, etc.). This is important to show that these decisions are affecting the lives of real people.

2. Share your story and why traveling with your ESA is your right and necessary for you. You can comment anonymously.

3. Tell about a time where your ESA has helped you. No one has the authority to say your testimony is valid or invalid. Make it understood how your problem was solved directly by your emotional support animal. Get specific if you can with time, dates, airline, etc.

4. Describe how this decision will affect future travel plans.  Comments on the economic effects of this rule are especially helpful. You should use your comment to show how future travel plans will be impacted by this decision. For example, if these changes are threatening to make you cancel a planned vacation at the end of the year, make sure to include that. Also, make sure to include how this proposed legislation makes you feel. Many patients with legally prescribed ESA’s feel this action is discriminatory and cruel.

5. Suggest alternatives to this rule change. Consider pet-friendly flights or punishing the misleading and unlawful companies that issue fake ESA Letters, not the person, for example. Share your thoughts on alternatives to this drastic rule proposal.

NOTE: If you received your ESA letter through one of the qualified medical professionals working with US Support Animals, we highly recommend that you mention that in your comment.

One of the biggest problems plaguing the emotional support animal community is the large group of shady providers of ESA letters that are misleading and unlawful. This creates a huge amount of confusion and hostility from those who do not understand the difference. We believe punishing these companies would go a long way in solving many of the problems the new regulations are intended to fix.
